About the Show

My days of silence are over.

For nearly 20 years, I watched from the sidelines. I saw families struggle. I saw kids suffer in silence. I witnessed the long-term impact of multiculturalism done well — and done poorly. Conversations with Tamekia is where those observations finally get a voice. — Tamekia Swint

Why This Show Exists

When Tamekia started Styles 4 Kidz almost 20 years ago, she thought she was providing a simple solution to a complex problem — teaching families how to care for textured hair. What she discovered over two decades is that the problem extends far beyond hair. It's about identity, race, belonging, confidence, and what it really means to affirm Black and multiracial children. Most parents in these communities are genuinely trying — navigating the complexity of raising a Black child in a white world, offering a view many of them have not lived themselves. And the kids? She has watched them trying to exist in and fully embrace two worlds, and all of the complexity of enduring and living through it.

Hair & Identity

Hair is the entry point — but the conversation goes deeper. What does a child's hair tell them about who they are and who they're allowed to be?

Race & Belonging

Honest dialogue about race, transracial adoption, foster care, and what it means to raise a Black child in a white world.

Bridge Building

White parents, adoptive families, adoptees, and foster care alumni bring their lived perspectives. Tamekia brings hers. Together, they build understanding.

Rooted in Styles 4 Kidz

Conversations with Tamekia grows out of nearly 20 years of work through Styles 4 Kidz, where Tamekia and her team help families and kids in multiracial families navigate the complexities of understanding and managing textured hair. On Hairitage Talks — a quarterly formal podcast under Styles 4 Kidz — many of these complex issues already have a home. But this show is different. This is Tamekia's personal perspective, more frequently, incorporating her Black identity in every conversation. This is a place where her ideas can exist inside of the larger work she does every day.

Tamekia Swint

Founder & Executive Director, Styles 4 Kidz. Speaker. Author. Social Entrepreneur. Educator.

My name is Tamekia Swint and I am the Founder and Executive Director of Styles 4 Kidz, where we help families and kids in multiracial families navigate through the complexities of understanding and managing textured hair. When I started Styles 4 Kidz almost 20 years ago, I started initially thinking I would provide a resource for families — a simple solution to a complex problem. But over the years, what I discovered is that the problem extends further than teaching parents how to do their kids' hair. In fact, it's so much deeper than hair.

What I bring to every conversation is my perspective on hair care and identity — as a Black observer in this space, as a stylist, and as a founder. White parents, adoptive families, adoptees, and guests who have lived in foster care offer different lived perspectives. My hope is that through this podcast we can continue the bridge-building work that helps each side understand one another better and create a deeper sense of unity for all involved in loving, supporting, and raising children in this community.
