Conversations with Tamekia

Real Talk. Real Issues. Real Impact.

Hair · Identity · Race · Belonging · Confidence

"Every child deserves to be seen, affirmed, and celebrated."

For almost 20 years, Tamekia has observed families trying to navigate the complexity of raising Black children in a white world — a view many of them have not lived themselves. She has watched kids trying to exist in and fully embrace two worlds, and the long-term impact of when multiculturalism is done well, and when it's not.

This is that conversation.

Hair Day Can Become Relationship Day

Guest: Dr. Marva Lewis

Can combing your child's hair become a moment of connection? Dr. Marva Lewis joins Conversations with Tamekia to explore how textured hair care can support trust, cultural identity, and parent-child bonding. Hair day can bring up powerful feelings — for children and the adults caring for them. Dr. Lewis's work, Talk, Touch & Listen While Combing Hair, invites caregivers to recognize everyday routines as opportunities to listen, respond with gentleness, and help children feel seen and valued.

About the Show

For almost 20 years, Tamekia has observed families trying to navigate the complexity of raising Black children in a white world — a view many of them have not lived themselves. She has watched kids trying to exist in and fully embrace two worlds, and the long-term impact of when multiculturalism is done well, and when it's not. On Conversations with Tamekia, she brings her Black identity and perspective to every episode — as a stylist, as a founder, and as an observer who has silently watched from the sidelines long enough.

"This is a place and a space where my personal ideas regarding this topic can exist inside of the larger work that I do every day."
